What is Menopause?

Menopause (also known as the "change of life" or climacteric) is a stage of the human female reproductive cycle that occurs as the ovaries stop producing estrogen, causing the reproductive system to gradually shut down.Menopause is the time in a woman's life when the function of the ovaries ceases. It also refers to the ceasing of menses, whereas the gradual process through which this occurs, which typically takes a year but may last as little as six months or more than five years

What are the causes, incidence and risk factors of Menopause?

The pituitary gland produces a substance called follicle stimulating hormone (F.S.H.), which is the main hormone involved in producing mature eggs but the eggs that now remain are unable to respond as well to F.S.H. as they did when they were younger. As a result the ovaries will start failing to release eggs and there will be a greatly reduced production of the sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. However, the hormone F.S.H. which is always present in the body, will increase dramatically as the pituitary gland makes more F.S.H. in an attempt to encourage the ovaries to respond and cause the remaining eggs to mature. At this time your periods will probably become irregular and unpredictable (until they stop altogether).
A natural menopause happens when the ovaries, which had produced an egg every month during the woman's adult life, stop working. The amount of the female hormone oestrogen drops when the ovaries stop working.

What are the symptoms of Menopause-Disease?

The symptoms include:
- Flushing of skin and hot flashes- A reduction in estrogen is associated with Hot flashes, caused by an increase of blood flow in the blood vessels of the face, neck, chest and back.

- Mood changes and decreased libido (sex drive) are due to partially from the hormone decrease, but may also result from having to deal with hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

- Irregular menstrual periods.

- Thinning of the tissues of the vaginal wall causes vaginal dryness.

- In addition to these, some changes may go undetected for many months or years by increasing the risk for osteoporosis (loss of calcium from the bones, causing bone fragility), which sometimes isn't detected until a bone fracture occurs.

Diagnosis & Tests

Usually no tests are required, however, in some women who had an early menopause, blood and urine test to measure the levels of estrogen, progesterone, and plasma estradiol and estrone (part of the reproductive steroid group) is done.
