Major chemical constituents responsible for physicochemical and therapeutic action of the herb are :- Alkaloids (0.32% in bark) Crystalline alkaloid loturine (0.24% in Bark) Amorphous alkaloid loturidine (0.06% in bark) Crystalline alkaloid colloturine (0.02% in bark) The bark yields about 0.32 per cent of total alkaloids consisting of a crystalline alkaloid loturine (0.24%), an amorphous alkaloid loturidine (0.06%) and another crystalline alkaloid colloturine (0.02%). Loturine is identical with abrine and Harman. All the alkaloids in dilute acid solution show intense blue violet fluorescence.
