Major chemical constituents responsible for physicochemical and therapeutic action of the herb are:-
Volatile oils (1.5 to 3.5%)
Diploid race (North America)
Triploid race (Europe)
Tetrapoloid race (East Asia)

|
Minor chemical constituents of this herb are :-
Volatile oil
Asarone
b-asarone
Percent of volatile oil and asarone increases with increase in polyploidy. The North American race contains about 2.2% volatile oil and is practically free from asarone whereas European race contains about 10% asarone in volatile oil. In tetrapoloid there are two races one contains 2% b-asarone in the drug and 20% in volatile oil and in the other contains about 4 to 8%t b-asarone in drug and more than 80 percent in volatile oil.
