Acne is a common problem found among the teenagers and every teenager wants to get rid of it. In reality there are hundreds of effective treatment for acne and thousands of products! Most of the treatment can be grouped under nutritional, topical treatment like skin care treatment and medication.

Nutritional:

The human body is made in such a way that it has the capacity and potential to heal itself and make amazing recoveries provided it is well nourished and not suffering from allergies and food intolerance. So we can also say that a good nutrition program can help us to free ourselves from acne. It is seen that majority of people have deficient diets as they consume refined foods, sugar and lack of fresh fruits and vegetables. Intake of vital vitamins and a nourishing diet can supply vital nutrients to the body and make the skin healthy and shiny there by healing acne naturally. Often though this may not always clear your acne problem but no doubt will help you to minimize the problem.

Topical Treatment:

By topical treatment I mean applying lotion and cream on the affected area so as to prevent it and stop it from spreading. The market is flooded with thousands of lotions, cream, toners each claiming to relieve you from acne problem with in a few days. Some of them may help you while others may damage your already affected skin. So before utilizing it try to know about it thoroughly.Among those which help you will  only give you the temporary relief as they  help you in keeping your skin clean, fight bacteria and calm the irritating skin,  and  are effective only when the acne problem is a mild one. These topical treatments are capable of handling only the surface problem and not the severe ones.

Medications:

There are some medications too available in the market but are to be prescribed by a doctor and people go in for this only after trying out the topical treatment. If the reason for acne is hormonal imbalance then an oral contraceptive pill will be of a great help. It is in very rare cases that women suffer from hormonal imbalance. Some other medicines available are Isotretinoin and Nicotinamide but are to be taken under strict medical supervision due to its harmful side effects which may range from flushes to psychosis.

The best approach is to go in for milder treatment and if not relieved consult a doctor. But careful combination of good skin care, nutritious diet, hygienic condition, reducing stress will help you a lot in reliving you from acne problem. Handling acne from a combination of angles increases your chance of clearing your acne once and for all.

Some common herbs which can treat Acne:

Tea Tree Oil: It is an effective acne fighter with less drying, stinging and redness.

Aloe Gel: It has anti bacterial property and should be applied externally.

Lavender oil: It reduces the inflammation

Treatment with Pranayam

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Pranayam is that part of Yoga that deals with breathing. Pranayam is the breathing process or the controlled manner of inhalation, exhalation and retention of vital energy force.  Air is necessary not only to breathe but also for the proper functioning of the body parts. While we can survive without food and water for many days we will not be able to live without air for even an hour. All the tissues would also be destroyed if the supply of air is cut off.

Hindus have realized the importance of this element very long ago and have insisted on the proper way of inhaling this vital element and also exhaling it. They have its importance written in many of their holy books among which Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is the best example.  To accommodate the importance of air in the body here follows a short story.

One day it happened that all the senses of the body quarreled among them selves each is stating it to be the most necessary organ in the body. Unable to come to a conclusion they went to Brahma – the creator and put the dispute in front of him. Brahma said,” that organ is the most important without which the body suffers the most is the most important.”

Eye was the first to move and returned after one year. It enquired,”How did you live without me?” The body replied,”Like a blind man I was not able to enjoy the Mother Nature”

Next to go was the ear. When he returned after a year the body replied, “I lived like a deaf person. We stayed and accepted whatever people said.” The next to go was the mind and when returned got the answer,” Lived like a fool. We were like fools without you and remained a dumb person.”

When the seed left and returned after a year the body replied,” We lived like a person without any talent.”

Lastly it was the turn of the breath to leave. At the moment it departed it destroyed the other senses too all the senses started to shout unanimously, “Sir, we request you not to leave as we will be dumb without you.”

This proves that it is the breath which dominates each and every cell and tissues present in the body.

Swami Ram Dev has been promising that he has the cure for all diseases and illness known to mankind from diabetes, AIDS, hepatitis and cancer to epilepsy. And all this he will do through Yoga and pranayam. While the skeptics are demanding evidences of such claims, the testimonials from individual who have been cured through Pranayam are keeping on increasing. According to him we can even get rid the world of pharmaceutical medicines through pranayam and ayurveda.

.

How does Pranayam works?

According to Hinduism, Pran is the creation of the supreme god, Brahma, and its   inherent quality is " Motion&quot. This quality of Pran is felt in Vayu ( air) which is always in motion. The Human body is said to be made of five elements namely- Kasha (space of vacuity), Vayu (air), Agni (fire) Jal (water) and Prithvi (earth).Among all these elements Vayu is important as proved by the story above. It has been said that when you sit in one of the asana and regulate the act of respiration, it is Pranayam. The act of inhaling air in the body so as to reach the lungs, is called inspiration and the act of throwing the air out of the body, is called expiration. When we inhale, it is not only the air or oxygen that enters our body, but along with the air also enters a divine energy which keeps the body alive. Doing pranayam does not mean only taking the air in the body (inhalation) and throwing it out (exhalation), but along with oxygen, we also take in our body the Vital Energy. This Vital Energy permeates the entire universe and what we inhale and exhale is the fragment of it.

There is a sequence of 7 pranayam with allotted time periods for each which has become very well known. Millions have benefited from this simple package of breathe-control exercises. They are

  • Nadi Suddi-It is necessary to cure the nadis before commencing any exercise. For this you have to sit in padmasan and take deep breath and breathe out in deep breath.
  • Sukha Purvaka-Sit in the padmasan posture. Breathe in with right nostril and hold breath till you count 12 and breathe out by left nostril. Now breathe in by left nostril and hold breath till 12 counts and breathe out by right nostril. Repeat this for 5 times. The ratio between inhaling, retension and exhaling the air should be 1:4:2.In this type of pranayam deep concentration is necessary to be effective. This helps in purification of nadis, improves the concentration power, and improves the digestion power and circulation of blood.
  • Bhastrika – Rapid succession of forcible expulsions is a characteristic feature of this exercise. While practicing this type of pranayam you have to keep your mouth closed and inhale and exhale air continuously at least for 20 times. Bhastrika removes inflammation of the throat, increases the gastric fire, and destroys phlegm and all diseases of the nose and lungs and other diseases which arise from the excess of wind.
  • Ujjayi- While practicing this type you have to sit comfortably, inhale through both the nostrils and exhale through left nostril by closing the right nostril. This removes the heat from the head.

While all these can be done by the people who are still novice at pranayam the others like Distant healing, Pranic healing and palvini require expertise in pranayam. If you become an expert with distant healing and Pranic healing you can not only cure yourself but also other patients who have the receptacle mind with your pran. These types of healing are called alternative healing and are very effective and give immediate relief to patients.

How to tackle Knee pain

Monday, December 21st, 2009

From dusk to dawn while moving along the road, we encounter innumerable people walking with a limp almost everywhere. The cause is severe pain in the knees incidentally the most vulnerable joints in the body. The knee is the largest and most complicated and unstable joint in human body where two bones are placed over one another and held together by ligaments. It is a weight – bearing joint that straightens, bends, twists and rotates.
The knee is used for everything such as standing up, sitting, walking, running, jogging, jumping, climbing etc. All these motions put the knee joint under stress and increase your risk of acute knee injury. Most sudden injury of the knee is caused by overuse or overload. Women suffer more frequently as compared to men because of their weak muscles and wider hips, putting more pressure on the knee joint.
The common symptoms are swelling, difficulty in straightening the knee joint i.e. locking, sound like click, feeling of giving away.
Swelling occurs due to the accumulation of sensorial fluid or  blood inside or outside the joint. Acute swelling is due to injury to ligament. Chronic swelling is due to chronic arthritis, or infection. Knee might give away for a moment while walking or climbing down the stairs when one is forced to stop. Reason may be due to loose body in the joint, injury to ligament or weakness of surrounding muscles. If we hear the only click sound and if it doesn’t accompany any pain or swelling we need not have to worry.
Factors  helping  in reducing stress:
·        Walking is very good exercise  for the knee joint. The walking distance should be increased gradually.
·        Should run on a soft surface and avoid an uneven surface.
·        Proper footwear help in curing the pain.
·        Increase in body weight is a major contribution to knee problem as it places more stress on knee joint. Therefore weight reduction may help in reducing stress on the knees.
·        Lying on the back and moving both legs like cycling in both clockwise and anti clockwise direction.
Most knee pain is treated conservatively but there are situations in which surgery is required. Athletes are at an elevated risk for sudden injuries that may require surgery such as torn ligament in the center of the knee or certain type of fractures. For advanced knee osteoartherisis knee replacement is the last resort.
Early symptom of knee problem is commonly ignored due to various reasons resulting in long –term suffering, permanent disability and also inevitable surgery. In order to save one self from pain, long-term suffering, decreased mobility and feeling of helplessness, one should seek treatment in the initial stages of knee problem so that disability and surgery can be avoided.

Some herbs used in treating Knee pain:

Aloe vera—This plant contain an enzyme called bradykininase that helps in reducing the  swelling of the knee caused by injury and water retention. It is also believed to help relieve pain.

Cabbage Leaves–Although a tasty vegetable, cabbage leaves also have cooling effects and serve as a slight anti-inflammatory for hot, inflamed knees

Simple steps to control Blood Sugar

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

No one ever gives his blood sugar a second thought unless and until he has diabetes. But beware! Scientists and researchers have come to a conclusion that whether you have diabetes or not a diet loaded with foods that increase your blood sugar level can increase the risk of heart disease, damage the blood vessel and raise the cholesterol level in the body. It may even chip away the memory and increase the risk of certain type of cancer. This has brought about a revolution in the way we understand diet and health. Luckily the damages do not happen overnight and even a slight change in the food you eat can start you on a healthier path and make you feel energized immediately.

The lure of sugar hits:

When you need quick refreshment what do you go for? Lollies,  pastry, or a packet of biscuits? All these are called convenience food as they dissolve quickly in your stomach and they race into the blood stream flooding the body with glucose There is no harm in it but the thing is it won’t last long and you are left feeling hungry well before the next meal time.

Unfortunately our usual diets are choked with fast foods which increase the blood sugar level .It is a common sight of us left with less energy than what we would like to have and continuous feeling of restlessness. It is also not a surprise that most of us  today are overweight and would be only glad to loose some pounds. The reason behind this is our life style and the food we eat. Yes eating too much and very little of physical exercise is the lion’s share in contribution towards the obesity. Low energy and weight gain are only the tip of the ice berg.

Why blood sugar matters?

Even when the blood glucose level reaches the sky after a heavy meal, our body has the ability to bring it back to normal in a few hours time. Only in people with untreated diabetes have high  blood sugar levels most of the time. It was thought by the doctors for a long time that only these group of people needed attention and control on the food they eat. But the recent researches made reveal that even in healthy people, high levels after meals can damage the body even though it does not cause diabetes.

With all these information you will now be wondering how to control the level of blood sugar in the body?  There is no need to panic. It is very easy to tame the blood sugar level in your body .Follow the simple 7 steps to control the blood sugar .

  1. Choose low glycaemic –index food and keep the portions moderate:  If you choose slow acting food instead of fast acting food, you can keep you’re your blood sugar level low and steady. It will be better if you keep a watch over the quantity of intake you have no matter what it is.  All kinds of legumes, cereals, vegetables (except beets and pumpkin) , leafy vegetables and fruits  have low glycaemic  index in them and they can be added in the diet.
  2. Make three of your carb servings whole grains: Make sure that you have whole grains in your diet as these will help to prevent the heart disease and diabetes independently of their effects on blood sugar.
  3. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables: Most of the fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibres. If you add these to your carbohydrate rich meal, then you can be successful in making your diet blood glucose friendly.
  4. Have a lot of protein at every meal: it has been proved that protein lowers the overall glycaemic index of the meals and helps in curbing the hunger which in turn helps in making the weight loss easier. Some of the protein rich food is lean meat, fish, poultry and milk products. Vegetarians can have pulses, pea nut butter , Soya milk ,nuts and legumes.
  5. Favor good fats to bad ones: ‘Bad’ saturated fats can interfere with the body’s capacity to control the blood sugar level while the ‘good’ unsaturated fats assist the body in controlling the blood sugar level. The good fats also help in lowering the over all glycaemic index of meals.
  6. Eat in small quantity:  When we talk about the quantity of food we are not talking about carbohydrate rich foods but about all foods. Even when you are eating a low glycaemic index diet, quantity of food does counts. Eating in small quantity can help you fight insulin resistance and along with exercise will help you to reduce the weight to a larger extent.
  7. Add acidic food to your meal:  Adding acidic food along with the carbohydrate rich food is a simple way to neutralize the blood sugar level in the body after a hearty meal. Citrus food, pickle liquid, lemon juice ,vinegar  all are acidic in nature and cooking food with any one of these or having it along with the meal helps in neutralizing the sugar level in the body.
  8. Do not smoke: Smoking affects the functioning of heart and also the circulatory system which can lead to heart disease and poor circulation of blood which is very harmful for a diabetic person. So it is better to stop smoking.

Incorporate these simple steps in your daily routine of your diet program and tame your blood sugar and feel energetic, and also reduce your over weight.

Unhealthy Meals

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Almost at every corner we can see a fast food outlet or a restaurant which are so tempting that we cannot ignore eating them. So it is difficult to stay away from unhealthy meals. Once we step out of the house we forget to have a look at the nutrition content but try to eat any food whose name is appealing to us and end up having heavy calories within a span of few minutes .This is really dangerous when comparing to the maximum intake of calories being 2000 per day. But by taking such fast food with out thinking we take the whole calorie in a meal. If this is to continue then it will be difficult for weight loss
Let us discuss some of these foods in detail.
Burger:
Burger though seem harmless are capable of increasing to your waistline if consumed often. It is because we no longer go in for ordinary simple burgers but are tempted to decide from how many stacks of meat, cheese and bread we can take. It is because some of these burgers are served with three stacks of meat cheese and bread and consists of 8 strips of bacon. Just think of the intake of the quantity of calories by us. Let me help you to visualize. Some of these so called tasty burgers contain 1520 calories, 111grams of fat, 47 grams of saturated fats, and 2760 mg of sodium. After consuming this we dream of weight loss and slim body. Isn’t it a joke we play on ourselves?
Fried Things:
Next on our top preferences are any thing that is fried. If we look around ourselves we will find that every thing available is fried. You will be amazed to hear that deep fried cola was sold at Texas. The appetizers which we carve for are all fried. The most common appetitive found in almost all the restaurant is the deep fried onion. Any idea of its contents? It can have up to 800 calories, 58 grams fat, 22 grams of saturated fat, and 1520mg of sodium. This is the raw figure without the dipping sauce. Thus we often end up consuming things with out giving a thought on what we are putting into the body.
Sodas and soft drinks:
An average can of soda is said to have 10 tea spoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 mg of caffeine, artificial food colors and sulphities. The sugar free sodas have even more unhealthy artificial sweetener. These sodas and soft drinks have slowly crept into the staple food of the majority of people. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has stated that it is the duty of the parents and health officers to recognize the soft drinks as they are — the liquid candy– and to put a check on its consumption on the basis of good health.
Dough nuts:
Dough nuts contain more refined sugar and flour, artificial flavors and partially hydrogenated oil that’s loaded with trans fats. Though they are found to be very tasty and the thought of it waters our mouths, they have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Coffee cake and other baked dishes:
This heading includes all the baked food whether it is a cake, pastry or a pack of biscuit. These foods have high amounts of trans fats and a host of other unsavory additives including corn syrup, preservatives and artificial flavors and colors. This is a fact with all the baked food . In fact the baked food for commercial purpose contain a huge amount of trans fat as most of them are made from they often made with hydrogenated oils. Some times they are fried in them too!
Luncheon meals:
Processed meats contain a carcinogenic precursor ingredient known as sodium nitrite,a close associate of sodium nitrate. In the words of the nutritionist, Mike Adams, author of the Grocery Warning Manual, “”Sodium nitrite is a dangerous, cancer-causing ingredient that has no place in the human food supply.” A survey made by University of Hawaii, on 200,000 people for seven years revealed that people who consumed the most processed meats (hot dogs and sausage) showed a 67 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer over those who consumed little or no meat products.
This does not mean that you stop eating processed meat. What you have to do is to search for nitrate free meat at your local shops and go in for it.
Canned soup:
By canned soup I refer to those traditional soups which are canned and available in the local grocery shops. They contain a lot of trans fat, artificial sweetener and sodium.Just one cup of canned soup can have almost 1,000 milligrams of salt but the maximum limit of salt a person can consume per day is 2400milligrams according to the dietary guidelines

We should be careful while we step out to have our food and be selective in ordering the food. We should also end up ordering healthier food like lean meats or fish which is grilled and not fried. It is always a better idea to inquire about the calorie content of the food .If you find some new name in the menu card better inquire what it is rather than ordering it and end up taking in calories meant for more than a day at one meal.

Reduce Obesity through fun

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

If you feel you are obsessed then there are two ways to lose weight -either go in for a crash diet or go in for a lot of exercises to burn your extra calories. A normal man requires a certain amount of calories from food to maintain his weight and this depends upon the basal metabolic weight.

Basal metabolic weight is the amount of calories that you spend on your body through the operation of involuntary muscles such as heart beat, temperature, respiration etc. The rest of your calories you intake is spent by the means of physical exercises. If you take anything more than the required maintenance quotas of calories then you are going to surely accumulate them leading to your being obsessed.
If you think you have accumulated the extra calories it is high time to start burning them.
Can you have fun and burn the extra calories at the same time?
Yes will be my answer. Every activity you do will burn a certain amount of calories. Even a blissful sleep! Research shows that 30 minutes of blissful sleep will burn 38.6 calories. Reading while sitting comfortably would burn 43 calories per 30 minutes. Even vigorous sex for 30 minutes would burn only 100 calories .If you make up your bed for 30 minutes you will burn 86 calories.
Games:
Half an hour of golf will help you burn 150 calories while Bowling helps you o burn up 129 calories and Billiards 100 for the same period of time. Half an hour of table tennis will help you to burn 175 calories. So if you think you are obsessed and want to loose the extra calories then you have to calculate the quantity of calories you want to loose and plan accordingly.
Water Sport:
In respect to other forms of games water sports are quite efficient in burning the calories as swimming for 30 minutes burns up 300-400 calories, snorkelling uses up 215and scuba diving 300 per 30 minutes. If you play beach volley ball for half an hour you could end up using 340 calories.
Some sports which helps in burning calories fast:
A saying goes: No pain No Gain. So if you are ready to take the pain there are various ways through which you can reduce your weight. Martial Arts, bicycling, Squash, high Impact aerobics will help you to burn up the extra calories accumulated in your body.
Device your own plan:
While the market is flooded with weight loss clinics instead of going there you can devise your own plan provided you have the proper discipline. To do this as said earlier you have to calculate your basal metabolic rate. After doing this you have to calculate the amount of calories to be burnt. The next step is to find out various means by which you can burn them .In fact you have to choose various methods by which you are willing to burn and the net amount you will be burning by doing them.
Once this is done prepare a schedule and maintain a diary and push yourself to follow the schedule.
Some points to remember:
In addition to the schedule and proper exercise it would be more effective if you reduce the calorie intake by 200 from your normal food. By doing this you can be assured of not putting on the amount of calories burnt.
You can also add some weight training exercise to your routine which will not only help you in burning the calories faster but also build up your muscles and let me tell you muscles consume more calories!

Even the intake of some herbs like Alfalfa, ginger help in reducing obesity

Some Facts about Type 2 Diabetes

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Diabetes is a common disease found among the people of all ages now a day. It refers to the increase of sugar level in the blood. It is controlled by injecting insulin in the blood stream. But there is another type of diabetes called Type 2 diabetes and generally referred as Diabetes mellitus type 2 and is characterized by high blood glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. It is generally considered to be the disease found adults but nowadays is even diagnosed in children. The term insulin resistance refers to the condition when the body cells do not respond  children, properly in the presence of insulin. In common language it does not refer to a stage when the production of insulin is less but to a stage when the body cells do not respond to insulin.

In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce sufficient insulin or the cells ignore insulin. It is insulin which helps in converting the glucose into energy. When the food is taken in by the process of digestion the sugar and starch present in the food is converted into glucose. Insulin absorbs the sugar from the blood into the cells for energy. If the glucose is not absorbed and it runs down the blood stream it results in a condition called Type 2 diabetes leads to two kind of immediate problems. They are

• The cells of the body will be starved of energy

• It may damage the eyes, kidney, nerves, and heart.

Some general treatment for Type 2 Diabetes:

The first and foremost treatment fro type 2 diabetes is to have a controlled and planned meal so that the blood glucose level is controlled. Steps should be taken for the immediate weight loss and regular exercising must be done.

People suffering from type 2 diabetes can use pills to control the diabetes. These pills can only be assistance but will not work if they are supplemented with proper meal planning and regular exercise. It may also be seen that though the blood glucose level goes down by taking pills it does not go near normal.

Some general facts about Type 2 Diabetes:

1. Warning Stage:

Before a person gets full blown diabetes he develops a stage generally referred to as “warning stage” other wise known as pre diabetes stage. There are millions of people who have this pre diabetes but are unaware of it. If diabetes is deducted at this stage it could be cured but the most unfortunate thing is that it is difficult to be deducted as it shows no symptoms of diabetes. As a result people continue to lead their normal way of life and end up having type 2 diabetes.

2. Common factors which may lead to Type 2 Diabetes:

The major factors leading to diabetes are aging, high carbohydrate diet and less exercise. America and the rest of so called developed western countries have a high combination of all these three factors. This will lead to the increase of diabetes patients in the next decade than ever before.

3. Tests for diabetes and pre diabetes are very simple:

A common test for diabetes is to measure the blood sugar level of a person before food or commonly called as fasting blood sugar. If the sugar level is above a certain limit he is said to suffer from diabetes and if it is less he is suffering from pre diabetes.

So you can do it at any time and get it done easily.

4. Diabetes and heart attack stroke is directly proportional:

In simple words diabetes increases the chances of heart attack and stroke. This is because a high level of blood sugar for a long time leads to the wear and tear of the heart muscles, veins and arteries which constitute the heart. This weakens the circulatory system. A weakened circulatory system is the cause for deadly heart attacks and strokes

5. Controlled diet and exercise are the ways to prevent diabetes:

If you want to stay away from being infected from diabetes you should get on a diabetes prevention diet and do a lot of exercise. Even if you are declared to be a diabetic you can cure yourself by exercising and having a controlled diet. This is possible if it is deducted at an early stage. Maintaining the weight is also important if one wants to stay away from being diabetic. Excess of body fat around the mid section of the body is yet another cause for type 2 diabetes.

Some herbs which help to cure type 2 diabetic:

• Cinnamon has been found to increase the conversion of glucose into energy and also blocks out free radicals. This helps in reducing the diabetic complications.

• Herbs like bitter melon, fenugreek and Gurmar (Gymnema Sylvestre) are used in ayurvedic medicine to treat type 2 diabetes.

• Chinese herbs alisma, anemarrhena, astragalus, atractylodes, dioscorea, ginseng, ho-shou-wu, hoelen, lycium, platycodon, polygonatum, pueraria, rehmannia, salvia, scrophularia, trichosanthes are used in treating type 2 diabetic person.
