Tips to keep yourself trim

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Almost every second person in this world is obsessed. Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health. The most common place where this is accumulated is stomach and waist and the most common thing which leads to its accumulation are our food habits and life style. Just by making a few changes in it we trim and shape our body as we desire.

1.         Avoid junk food: Say no to all kinds of sweets, chocolates, fried and junk food and soft drinks. All these have a high percentage of calories. If you say no to these, you will protect your body from gaining a couple of kilos.

2.         Cut down your cups of hot drinks: Reduce the number of times you drink tea or coffee. Even if you drink reduce the quantity of sugar you put in them. Sugar substitutes like sucralose, stevia, agave syrup are always welcome!

3.         Add naturally sugar rich food in your diet: Stave off your sugar carvings by having foods which are naturally rich in sugar like fruits, rasins, dates and prunes.

4.         Eat Slowly: Some people tend to eat fast out of habit. They do not properly chew the food. They simply swallow the food immediately when it is put in the mouth. If you eat like this you will end up eating more calories than actually required by your body.

5.         Eat Whole grain Food: Add millets, ragi, and bajra to your diet. Instead of white rice eat unpolished brown rice. These whole grains will make your body burn more and increase the metabolism rate. Whole grains not only carter to our nutritional requirement but also reduces the calories we consume other wise.

6.         Consume a good amount of Protein: When pressed for time a bread toast or magi seems to be a good option than a proper meal. But compromising on protein intake can thwart feeling of satiety which inadvertently leads to overeating. Instead you can have a chicken or cottage cheese sandwich or a glass of skimmed milk or protein shakes.

7.         Include essential fats in your diet: Good fat also known as omega -3, found in nuts and oily fishes, is known to increase metabolism. Sprinkling seeds (flax seed, pumpkin and sunflower seed) or even nuts on your salad, cereal or yoghurt will do the trick.

8.         Eat food rich in antioxidants: Berries, dark colored vegetables and fruits which are rich in antioxidants will keep your skin glowing and shining. So consume plenty of them.

9.         Fill up with fluids: Fight carving for food by drinking herbal tea, green tea, lemon water or even tender coconut water. Do not drink plenty of energy drinks. Also avoid hard drinks.

10.       Keep portion sized small: Eat from smaller plates. Also fill half of your plate with salads so that your carving fore rice or chapatti is less.

11.       Use a pedometer: Walk up to 10,000 steps a day. So use a pedometer to track the count of your steps.

12.       Walk, stand more and sit less: It is proven fact that standing burns more calories than sitting. So do not sit for long hours at stretch. Either take a stride to wash room or to drink water if your working style calls for long hours of sitting.

13.       Do in for building muscles: Building muscles will increase your metabolism rate. So even though it increases your weight to some extent it will help in shaping your body.

14.       Have a good sleep: Inadequate sleep will add to your already existing belly fat. So never compromise with your sleeping habit.

15.       Reduce weight slowly: Never try to reduce weight all of sudden. Aim at reducing two- four kilos in a month as it ensures you to lose fat permanently.

Reduce obesity through home remedies and herbs

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. (Wikipedia)

If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight. If your BMI is 30 or over you are considered obese. (Medical Definition)

The BMI is a statistical measurement derived from your height and weight. Although it is considered to be a useful way to estimate healthy body weight, it does not measure the percentage of body fat.

Health hazards involving Obesity:

Obesity is a major health threat to person of all age. People who are obese face the following threats to their health.

•           Bone and joint problems

•           Gallstones and liver problems

•           Heart Attack

•           High blood cholesterol

•           Diabetes

•           Sleep apnea

•           Gout

•           Gastro esophageal reflux disease

•           Infertility

•           Back Pain

How to check weight gain:

It is very simple to check weight gain. Diet control and regular exercise immediately result in weight loss. While going in for diet control care has to be taken that you take all the necessary nutrients required by the body.  If they are not taken you will not only reduce your weight but also the energy. You will start feeling fatigue which may lead you to numerous other health hazards. At least half an hour of rigorous exercise is necessary to remove the accumulated fat in the body. Another main reason fro weight gain is irregular eating. Instead of skipping meals if we plan our meals and be regular we may not put on more weight.

Some home remedies which will help in burning excess weight:

•           Add a spoonful of honey to fresh lime juice (of half a lime). Make a solution of the mixture by adding warm water. Drink it regularly. This will help in burning the excess weight accumulated around the stomach.

•           Make it a habit of taking cabbage in your regular diet. Cabbage has a chemical called tartaric acid which inhibits sugar and carbohydrates to fat.

•           Eat ripe tomatoes in the breakfast. This will help in weight reduction.

•           Add mint leaves to the salad. This will help in reduction of weight loss.

Herbs which assist in weight reduction:

•           Cayenne: It contains capsaicin that can stimulate digestion, increase metabolism and aid fat burning. Adding 20 gms of it to your daily diet will help in speeding up of metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. But caution must taken before adding it to the diet as it may lead to running nose and watery eyes. Persons having ulcers, heartburn or gastritis should avoid taking it.

•           Green Tea: Green tea being thermogenic in nature increases oxidation of fat molecules in the body. Consumption of 4-5 cups of green tea a day will burn 70-80 calories a day.

•           Dandelion: It replaces minerals, takes away bad cholesterol and fatty acids before they enter into fat cells through the bloodstream, increases our body’s metabolism but is a mild laxative. Continuous use of this may lead to electrolyte imbalance.

Simple ways to avoid allergies

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

An allergy refers to an exaggerated reaction by our immune system when our body comes in contact with certain foreign substances. Generally these foreign particles are treated by the body as harmless foreign objects and so no response is created by the body. But in case of allergic patients, the body recognizes them and tries to attack them, by starting the immune system on. Immune system is the organized defense mechanism against foreign particles.

The substances which start the immune system on are called as allergens. When an allergen comes in contact with the body of an allergic person it causes the immune system to develop an allergic reaction. When your body starts to react to those foreign particles (allergens) which are considered to be harmless to majority of the human body, you are considered to be allergic towards that particular allergen.

Different steps which are involved in Allergic reaction:

Almost anything and every thing may trigger an allergic reaction in your body. Whatever the reason is it is caused by a reaction in your immune system.

  • It involves an exaggerated response of the immune system. The body’s immune system involves the white blood cells, which produce antibodies.
  • The white blood cells produce an antibody specific to that antigen. This is called “sensitization.”
  • The job of the antibodies is to detect and help destroy substances that cause disease and sickness. In allergic reactions, the antibody is called immunoglobulin E or IgE.
  • This antibody promotes production and release of chemicals and hormones called “mediators.”
  • Mediators have effects on local tissue and organs in addition to activating more white blood cell defenders. It is these effects that cause the symptoms of the reaction.
  • If the release of the mediators is sudden or extensive, the allergic reaction may also be sudden and severe, and anaphylaxis may occur.
  • Allergic reactions are unique for each person. Reaction time to allergens can vary widely. Some people will have an allergic reaction immediately, for others it will take time to develop.
  • Allergy can develop at any stage
  • Allergens are substances that are foreign to the body and can cause an allergic reaction.
  • IgE is the allergy antibody, produced by the body.

Natural Ways to prevent Allergy:

1. Avoid oily food:   Cleanse your body twice every year. I don’t mean external cleaning. Here I want you to cleanse your body internally. You can do this by avoiding foods which can not be easily digested, like heavy oil food, cold food, cold drinks, ice cream and tinned food

2. Eat with season: Consume what is available seasonally. In summer have fruits like mango and in winter fruits like apple. Similarly in spring have plenty of leafy vegetables and in winter root vegetables. It means have what is available in that season. Don’t go in for cold storage fruits and vegetables.

3 Add spices to your food: Spices in addition to making your food tastier, they help in reducing the allergic reaction to plants as they are in flavonoids and phenols. Some of the very effective among them are Turmeric, Sage, Cumin, ginger, black pepper. Saute these spices with olive oil or ghee to get the maximum benefit of these spices.

4. Take proper rest: Proper rest not only helps in getting energetic but also boosts up the depressed immune system.

5. Know your body: Avoid any thing that triggers your immune system. If your body is allergic, find out the allergen and try to avoid coming in contact with it.

Do you know how to Walk

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Of course, most people would say, everyone knows how to walk; it is as instinctive as breathing. The comparison is apt- just like many people breathe inefficiently, in today’s world many have forgotten how to walk. If you look around you, you will see that by the time people reach their fifties, they either waddle with their sideways swaying movement or have a forward shuffling gait. This unnatural way of walking pushes the spine, hip and knees out of alignment resulting in aches, pains and even degenerative arthritis. As we grow older we have to concentrate on maintaining a proper walking technique. Slouching, bad posture and an improper gait are avoidable pitfalls.

The average person takes between 3,000 and 4,000 steps a day and has been walking since their first birthday but, frighteningly, most of us are still doing it incorrectly. If you are walking incorrectly your muscles are forced to do some extra work to compensate and support your body which will lead to muscle soreness and joint problems.

Walking properly has plenty of benefits, from improving general posture and muscle tone to preventing twisted ankles, calluses and long-term joint damage, but it takes time and concentration to achieve. It also helps in loosing weight. The body language expert Robert Phipps, the way we walk is central to making a good (or bad) first impression.

Right Posture for walking:

Whenever you walk, hold your head high and the neck straight. The eyes should be focused 15 -20 feet ahead, the chin held parallel to the ground, the stomach pulled in, the feet shoulder width apart and the arms should swing naturally at right angles( not across body)

Some do nots while walking:

  • Don’t tilt your head to one side,
  • Don’t slump your shoulders
  • Don’t strike the ground with your toe first. use your heel first, then feel the pressure roll towards balls of your feet, then push off your toes

Increase Metabolism to reduce weight

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

What is metabolism?
Metabolism is the process by which our bodies combine nutrients with oxygen to produce the energy our body needs in order to maintain normal bodily functions. This energy is measured in calories, and calories are considered fuel to our bodies.
In other words, metabolism is the process of breaking down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats stored in the body, to yield the energy your body needs to maintain itself.

What is Metabolic Rate?
In a common language metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns the calories stored by it. It is faster in lesser weight people when compared to over weighted people. The rate of your metabolism depends on the interaction between the number of calories you consume, the number of calories you burn while eating and exercising, and the calories you burn based on your individual genetic makeup.

Metabolism and Weight Loss
Metabolism has an upper hand in loosing the extra weight that you have put on. And once those pounds are gone they will stay off because an increased metabolic rate will keep burning any extra fat before your body can store it away.

What influences the metabolic rate of your body?

• Age. Metabolic rate decreases by 5% every 10 years after the age of 40.
• Sex. It is higher in men than women
• Genetics. It is a hereditary.
• Disease. Thyroid disorders will affect the rate of your metabolism.

Some dos which decrease your metabolism rate:
• Skipping meals
• Having a low calorie diet
• Snacking on foods high in sugar

Some dos which will help you to increase your metabolism
• The day with an early and healthy breakfast.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Do regular aerobic exercise
• Get a good amount of blissful sleep
• Exercise in the evening
• Have protein rich food as it helps in stabilizing the insulin level
• Do muscle building exercise through weight training exercise or resistance exercise
• Drink ice chilled water

Herbs that help in increasing the metabolism:
• Whey Protien is a high quality protein and at the same time helps in increasing the metabolism
• Green Tea helps in burning fat and increases the metabolic rate.
• Fresh fruits that are high in vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B12, potassium, and phosphorus help in the efficient operation of your metabolism
• Ginger and garlic raises your body temperature and helps to stimulate your body’s fat burning mechanisms. Regular intake of garlic boosts your immune system and helps prevent cold and flu.

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Sciatica and Slipped disc are two painful and closely related conditions. This occurs mostly in the lower back or lumbar region. It originates from the lower part of the spine behind the hip joint and buttock to the back of the leg to the foot. Therefore the usual presentation of the pain is being felt hip to the toe. There is severe pain along the course of the sciatic nerve starting from the lower back and traveling down the leg

Causes for Sciatica Pain:

  • This is caused due to over-straining, misuse or traumatic injury to the back. Injury to the nerve, inflammation of the nerve or the nerve root due to metabolic, toxic or infectious disorders, compression of the nerve root due to ruptured intervertebral disc are the most common causes.
  • It may also occur while lifting heavier objects or twisting the body. Keeping a heavy wallet in the back pocket may also be one of the reasons for sciatica pain.
  • Improper postures of sitting and lack of exercise also can lead to this problem.

If our spine is not strong, and has incorrect alignment it will affect not only our ability to move around freely but also the communication of the nervous system with the rest of the body. Building a healthy back requires our time and commitment. A better lifestyle, good body mechanics and regular exercise and Yogasans will benefit our back.  In addition to specific back exercises, yogic techniques involving slow body movements followed by practices of deep relaxation are useful in maintaining the strength and flexibility of the spine. No matter what age we are, regular physical activity is an important way to stay healthy.

Avoid Junk Food to Stay Healthy

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

There is very old saying that ‘We are what we eat’. What we eat or put into our body gets digested and becomes a part of us. Imagine a building, a new brand house made up of only mud without the use of cement. We may get our house looking good on the outside by painting it bright. But the internal structure is not going to be strong. Very soon it will crumble. The same phenomenon is applied to our body. Put in junk food and low –nutrient and unhealthy foods, the structure of our body will become weak. The constant stress of low or missing nutrients will affect our body. The result will be premature aging, overweight, other health problems. The modern killer diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, heart problem and cancer are definitely related to our diet and life style.

Younger generation is almost mad after the junk food. It is the duty of the parents to show them the harmful effects of the junk food.  Some parents try to prevent their children from viewing advertisements which promote junk foods like maggi and soft drinks. But how far they are successful?

From nursery school to college and then to office every where there is a propaganda of junk food .So as parent we will not be able to keep the children away from junk food. But what we can do is to instill the harms of junk food right from the child hood days. Some are as follows:

This kind of food is high in calories but have no nutritional value. For example one slice of pizza or a bottle of soft drink will give us 200 calories mostly from sugared fat. There are no vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and the fats which are present in it are also trans- fats which clog the arteries and the lack of fiber leads to constipation and other related diseases. All the soft drinks and colas are high in caffeine sugar and phosphorous. On the other hand, they in fact cause our body lose calcium from the bones.

The favorite food of the children potato chips and French fries are also unhealthy because they are fried at high temperatures. Any time food is cooked, fried or processed using high heat, a substance called acrylamide is produced. Acrylamide is a known carcinogen and neurotoxin.

Another problem with fast or junk food is that it provides us with ample energy from bad fats and proteins with harmful food additives but lack in vitamins and minerals which are protective food as these help in building up our immunity. This kind of food lack in fibre also. As a result the junk-eating children are obese but not healthy. They are excess in weight but have nutritional deficiencies such as anemia,  they get easily fatigued, may perform poorly in studies, lack concentration,  are sometimes hyper in nature, and their body is a haven for all adulthood lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart attacks and high blood pressure.

So the only remedy is to modify junk into healthy food. What kind of  foods  must betaken to stay healthy— this thought may crop up in your mind. Here are some food which must be included in your daily diet.

  • Banana—-Bananas may not be included in many diets as it may help in gaining weight but due its rich potassium content it helps in controlling the blood pressure, also helps in strengthening the digestive system and lowers the cholesterol level.
  • Grapes—–Red seedless grapes with rich lutein content helps in reducing early atherosclerosis.
  • Green Tea——-Drinking just one cup a day will give great antioxident protection. The flavinoids in green tea are known as “polyphenols” – which are powerful antioxidents that may be greater than or equal to that of Vitamin C and vitamin E.
  • Lemons.—- They are excellent for detoxifying the liver, which contain high amounts of vitamin C, a vitamin that the body requires to make a substance called glutathione which helps the liver detoxify harmful chemicals.
  • Cabbage—-This plant has many virtues against cancer because it contains antioxidants. Also, it can clean the digestive tract and neutralizes some of the harmful compounds found in cigarette smoke.
  • Organic Drinks and Shakes ——–Juices, drinks and milkshakes are ideal for freshening up after a long day, or preparing for a work day. Organic drinks and shakes are doubly beneficial. These organic products offer vitamins and minerals, all in an unadulterated, organic form.
