Cardio vascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), principally heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading killer for both men and women among all racial and ethnic groups. It is the cause for 42% of deaths in America.
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) includes dysfunctional conditions of the heart, arteries, and veins that supply oxygen to vital life-sustaining areas of the body like the brain, the heart itself, and other vital organs.
Some of the diseases which come under cardio vascular disease are Ischemic Heart Disease: It is caused due to the deposit of excessive fat and there by narrowing the veins that supply oxygenated blood to the heart. It will also lead to less supply of oxygen supply to the brain and ultimately lead to a stroke.
Congestive heart failure: This is caused due to the extra effort the heart has to take to circulate the blood due to the deposit of excess fat. Even though the heart works harder different parts of the body do not receive the required amount of blood due to the blockages created by the deposits of fat. The causes for CHF are Kidney disorders, obesity, diabetes, birth control pills, pregnancy, smoking, excess alcohol, stress, and thyroid and adrenal gland problems.
Coronary heart disease:: It happens when our arteries narrower or even get completely blocked. The causes for it may be the deposition of calcium, cholesterol, fat and dead cells on the walls of arteries. When the coronary arteries are narrowed the supply of oxygen-rich blood is reduced to the heart muscle. This may result in damage or death of a part of heart muscle. Data results state that coronary heart disease is the cause of about 60% of all deaths associated with cardiovascular disease.
Atherosclerosis: In general terms it is the hardening of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries. It is the direct result of the deposition of cholesterol in the walls of the arteries.
Cerebrovascular disease: It refers to a problem with the circulation of blood in the blood vessels of the brain.
Peripheral vascular disease affects the circulation primarily in the legs]. Patients with this disease typically complain of pain in their calves especially when walking.
Rheumatic heart disease: This disease begins with a bacterial infection in childhood, affecting joints and heart valves. The heart problems appear many years later. Often the valves have to be replaced by an operation.
Congenital heart disease: It refers to a condition where there is a problem with the structure of the heart right from the birth. These defects may be as simple as a hole in the walls of the heart to a complex situation like affecting the flow of the blood. . Some congenital heart problems result in death unless immediately corrected by surgical intervention. Others cause disability to varying degrees and are treated by surgery later in life with correction of the problem sometimes requiring more than a single operation.
Heart Failure: This occurs when the pumping action of the heart cannot provide enough blood to the rest of the body as it is needed. This can happen as a result of damage to the heart muscle or from excessive consumption of alcohol, or because of a heart muscle disease also called a cardiomyopathy Prevention to the Cardio Vascular Disease: Heart disease may be the leading cause of death for both men and women, it is still avoidable. . Although you cannot change the family history or age but you can surely take steps so that it is avoided. Given below are some of them:
· Don’t smoke or use tobacco products: Smoking or using other tobacco products is one of the most significant risk factors for developing heart disease.
* Regular Exercise: Regular physical exercise will reduce the risk of fatal heart attack. Physical activity helps you control your weight and can reduce your chances of developing other conditions that may put a strain on your heart, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. It also reduces stress, which may also be a factor in heart disease.
* Eat a Healthy Diet: Your diet should be low in fat, cholesterol and salt but should be full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products that can help protect your heart.
Herbal Remedies for Cardiovascular Disease:
Ginger: It helps in lowering cholesterol and inhibits blood platelet collection.
Garlic: Garlic is a wonder drug for heart. It reduces the cholesterol levels, prevent blood clots, and destroy plaque.
Aswagandha: It is a unique herb with anti-stress adaptogenic action that leads to better physical fitness and helps cope with life’s daily stress.
Tumeric: It lowers blood cholesterol levels by stimulating the production of bile. It also prevents the formation of dangerous blood clots that can lead to heart attack.
Alfalfa :Alfalfa leaves and sprouts help reduce the blood cholesterol levels and plaque deposits on artery walls.
Lemon: Daily use of lemon also prevents the accumulation of cholesterol in the blood vessels.
Having any of these regularly will help you prevent the cardio vascular attack.
Sex Education and Children
Even today, parents find it difficult to talk about sex with their children. They(parents) feel that talking about sex with their children will lead them(children) in the wrong path.
Actually the parents are the best friends of their children and are in a position to talk freely and explain clearly about sex with their children. If the parents do not do this, the eager children will try to find other means to get knowledge about it. If they try to get it from other sources, they will end up getting half knowledge or improper knowledge. It is said that half knowledge is very dangerous when compared to no knowledge.
When to have sex talk with kids:
There is no such age limit as when the sex education should be imparted to the children. Even if a 4 year old child asks you a question related to sex instead of scolding him, try to explain it in a plain language which he is able to understand at his age. You can add “Rest of it you will understand when you grow up.”
How to talk about sex with children?
As a parent you will have to face a barrage of question from your child at any given point of time. You may also feel embarrassed at some point of time with a question put forth by the child. But all their queries must be tactfully addressed by you keeping in mind their age.Keep the following points in mind while discussing sex with your children.
Be Clear and Candid: As a parent, you should be very clear in mind as how much and what should a child know about sex and sexuality. If he is in the childhood days, you should teach him or her about their privacy regarding their sex organs . You can also teach him on locking the door while dressing up. If he is an adolescent, you should brief him about the changes that occur in his physique and behavior. In the adolescent period, it is necessary to talk with the children about the diseases connected with the sex (like AIDS,STA)
No Pride No Shame: Sexuality is a very important facet in anyone’s life. It is the duty of you as a parent to teach your child to have a healthy attitude towards sex and allied issues. Your child should have a positive perspective about the members of opposite sex.
Discuss: The children in general find it difficult to talk to the parents about the changes that occur in their body. Under this circumstance, it is the duty of you as a parent to start the discussion. If the child brings up a question regarding any sexual issue, instead of scolding him make him understand. If you don’t do it then he will try to find out from other sources like friends and internet by which he may be led in a wrong path.

Fresh and glowing skin acts as a mirror reflecting your youthfulness and good health. Some people are born with it, while others spend loads of bucks on it and endless trips to the beauty parlors and of course put in a lot of time as well.
Your natural beauty need not always be enhanced with the help of cosmetics and visits to the parlor. To bring out the natural beauty in you and make your skin have a healthy glow, all you need to do is to maintain a healthy body.

- Cleanse your skin: Cleansing your skin regularly. If you are in habit of applying make up make it a habit to remove it before you go to bed. In the morning, always make it sure that you splash your face with water and cleanse it with any cleanser that suits your skin. - Have a good night’s sleep: Deep sleep is very essential for a healthy body. Good sleep will help you to have a glowing skin or else you will find dark patches around your eyes.
- Do not use hot water for bathing as it will take away the natural moisture from your body.

Avoid Junk Food to Stay Healthy
There is very old saying that ‘We are what we eat’. What we eat or put into our body gets digested and becomes a part of us. Imagine a building, a new brand house made up of only mud without the use of cement. We may get our house looking good on the outside by painting it bright. But the internal structure is not going to be strong. Very soon it will crumble. The same phenomenon is applied to our body. Put in junk food and low –nutrient and unhealthy foods, the structure of our body will become weak. The constant stress of low or missing nutrients will affect our body. The result will be premature aging, overweight, other health problems. The modern killer diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, heart problem and cancer are definitely related to our diet and life style.
Younger generation is almost mad after the junk food. It is the duty of the parents to show them the harmful effects of the junk food. Some parents try to prevent their children from viewing advertisements which promote junk foods like maggi and soft drinks. But how far they are successful?
From nursery school to college and then to office every where there is a propaganda of junk food .So as parent we will not be able to keep the children away from junk food. But what we can do is to instill the harms of junk food right from the child hood days. Some are as follows:
This kind of food is high in calories but have no nutritional value. For example one slice of pizza or a bottle of soft drink will give us 200 calories mostly from sugared fat. There are no vitamins, minerals and other nutrients and the fats which are present in it are also trans- fats which clog the arteries and the lack of fiber leads to constipation and other related diseases. All the soft drinks and colas are high in caffeine sugar and phosphorous. On the other hand, they in fact cause our body lose calcium from the bones.
The favorite food of the children potato chips and French fries are also unhealthy because they are fried at high temperatures. Any time food is cooked, fried or processed using high heat, a substance called acrylamide is produced. Acrylamide is a known carcinogen and neurotoxin.
Another problem with fast or junk food is that it provides us with ample energy from bad fats and proteins with harmful food additives but lack in vitamins and minerals which are protective food as these help in building up our immunity. This kind of food lack in fibre also. As a result the junk-eating children are obese but not healthy. They are excess in weight but have nutritional deficiencies such as anemia, they get easily fatigued, may perform poorly in studies, lack concentration, are sometimes hyper in nature, and their body is a haven for all adulthood lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart attacks and high blood pressure.
So the only remedy is to modify junk into healthy food. What kind of foods must betaken to stay healthy— this thought may crop up in your mind. Here are some food which must be included in your daily diet.
- Banana—-Bananas may not be included in many diets as it may help in gaining weight but due its rich potassium content it helps in controlling the blood pressure, also helps in strengthening the digestive system and lowers the cholesterol level.
- Grapes—–Red seedless grapes with rich lutein content helps in reducing early atherosclerosis.
- Green Tea——-Drinking just one cup a day will give great antioxident protection. The flavinoids in green tea are known as “polyphenols” – which are powerful antioxidents that may be greater than or equal to that of Vitamin C and vitamin E.
- Lemons.—- They are excellent for detoxifying the liver, which contain high amounts of vitamin C, a vitamin that the body requires to make a substance called glutathione which helps the liver detoxify harmful chemicals.
- Cabbage—-This plant has many virtues against cancer because it contains antioxidants. Also, it can clean the digestive tract and neutralizes some of the harmful compounds found in cigarette smoke.
- Organic Drinks and Shakes ——–Juices, drinks and milkshakes are ideal for freshening up after a long day, or preparing for a work day. Organic drinks and shakes are doubly beneficial. These organic products offer vitamins and minerals, all in an unadulterated, organic form.
Home Remedies And Herbal Cure to Bronchitis
Bronchitis is an acute inflammation of the air passages within the lungs. It occurs when the windpipe and the large and small airways within the lungs become inflamed because of infection or other causes.
Causes: Bronchitis may be caused by a virus, bacteria, smoking or the inhalation of chemical pollutants or dust. Generally the air passages become clogged by debris and irritation increases. In response, a heavy secretion of mucus develops, which causes the characteristic cough of bronchitis. Bronchitis begins as a mild upper respiratory infection. Over a period of 2 – 3 days, it can develop into increasing respiratory distress with wheezing and a “tight” wheezy cough.
The viruses which are the cause of common cold are the causes for bronchitis too! It usually starts as a sore throat, runny nose or sinus infection, then spreads to your airways. It can cause a lingering dry cough, but it usually goes away on its own.
Bronchitis is seasonal and appears more often in the fall and winter months. It is a very common reason for infants to be hospitalized during winter and early spring. It is estimated that by their first year, more than half of all infants have been exposed to RSV.
How does it spread?
The virus is transmitted from person to person by direct contact with nasal fluids, or by airborne droplets. It can spread by direct or indirect contact. Although RSV generally causes only mild symptoms in an adult, it can cause severe illness in an infant.
Signs and Symptoms of Bronchitis:
- High fever
- Difficulty in breathing
- A deep chest cough
- Hoarseness and pain in the chest.
- Bluish skin due to lack of oxygen
- Cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.
- Intercostals retractions.
- Nasal flaring in infants.
- Rapid breathing.
- Fatigue.
- Back and muscle pain.
Herbal and home remedies to Bronchitis:
- Make a mixture of dried ginger powder, pepper and long pepper taken in equal quantities. Take a quarter teaspoon of the mixture three times a day with honey. It is very effective.
- Consumption of half a tea spoon of onion juice, empty stomach in the morning has been used for centuries as to cure and prevention to bronchitis.
- Add half a tea spoon of turmeric powder to half a glass of milk. Drink the same empty stomach, in the morning. It proves to be very effective.
- Chop 6 cloves of garlic very finely and place them in a bowl over a pan of simmering water with the contents of one small jar of white petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Cover and leave to simmer gently for several hours. Re-pot and use warm to rub into the back and chest.
- Take the grated zest of 1/2 a well-washed lemon and macerate in a glass of hot wine with a spoonful of honey. Taken three times a day this not surprisingly promotes sweating and is quite relaxing. This will help in reducing bronchitis.
How to develop Self Esteem in your child?
It is the responsibility and duty of each and every parent to motivate their children internally, build the self esteem of the child and make them feel loved. If this is done they will not turn to gangs, drugs or sex to feel the power or belong.
Here I want to share with you the simple but effective keys which will help you as a parent to provide your children a sense of well-being and security.
Use Genuine Encounter Moments (GEMS)
Your Child’s self esteem is greatly influenced by the quality time you spend with him and not the amount of time you spend with him. Today with both the parents having their own career in front of them , very busy in their lives very often pretend to hear what the child is saying while actually think what next to do. This will reflect in the behavior of the child. If you don’t give your child GEMS throughout the day, he will often start to misbehave. Remember, negative attention in a child’s mind is better than being ignored. Equally important is to recognize the feeling of your child.
Use Action, Not Words:
Instead of shouting at your child for not doing something or requesting him to do some thing again and again, it is better to show them with action. For example if you want him to make up the bed in the morning, leave the bed un-maked for the day. Or, if you have nagged your child about unrolling his socks when he takes them off, then only wash socks that are unrolled.
Give Children Appropriate Ways to Feel Powerful
Each and every one wants to feel that he is important and powerful. If you give them means to show it they are comfortable. If you don’t they will feel neglected and unimportant. Some of the simple means to make them feel important are to ask their advice, give them choices, and let them help you balance your check book or help you shop.
Use Natural Consequences
Don’t interfere too much with the activities of your child. Let him face the consequences of his action and then learn by his mistakes. This will develop the self confidence in him. For example, if your child forgets to take his lunch to school don’t rush with it to the school after him. Let him manage a day with out his lunch box. Then he will know the value of remembering.
Use Logical Consequences
Some times the natural consequences are too far in future and it does not make sense for the child to wait till it happens. In that case try to use some logical consequence. For example, if your child has forgotten to return his video, instead of not allowing him to watch video for a week it is better that you return for him and deduct the amount (for late return) from his pocket money.
Withdraw from Conflict
Never conflict with your child. If at any point of time your child is being angry or speaking disrespectfully to you, it is best if you leave the room or tell the child you will be in the next room if he wants to “Try again.” Do not leave in anger or defeat.
Separate the Deed from the Doer
Never tell your child that he is bad! That tears at his self-esteem. Even if does some thing which you do not appreciate let him know that his action is bad but do not say he is bad. In order for a child to have healthy self-esteem, he must know that he is loved unconditionally no matter what he does. Do not motivate your child by withdrawing your love from him
Be Kind and Firm at the Same Time
Always be kind with your child. That does not mean that you always give in to your child’s tantrums or needs. Let your child know that you love him but at the same time put your foot down and be firm on issues you do not want him to act.
Be Consistent, Follow Through
Be firm and stay with what you have said before. Do not keep wavering with your talks and promises. For example you have agreed that your child will watch T. V. for 11/2 hours a day, keep the time fixed what ever the matter is. Do not give in to his demand of allowing him to watch more as his favorite match is on air or his favorite movie is on air. Do not give in to his tears, pleas, demands. Your child will learn to respect you more if you mean what you say.
Some changes in daily routine which will help your child to build his self esteem:
- Eating Right. Give your child a proper and balanced diet and at proper time. This will enable your child to stay healthy which is very necessary in building the self esteem.
- Avoid putting pressure on your child. Stress will poison his body and mind and making it that much more difficult to maintain a positive attitude. Train your child in relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation, which can help to ease stress and balance mind and body so that he feels more at peace and better able to handle whatever life throws at him.
- Give proper and full attention when ever you are conversing with him.
- Take his views and advice on some important decisions you are taking.
Improve Your Vision Naturally
Almost 90% of the world population is facing with vision problem. Today we find small children wearing eyeglasses as an aid to improve their vision. The most common reason behind this is the normal strain of daily life and the modern technologies that we stare at constantly-T.V., computers or mobile phones. All these stress our eyes beyond the normal para meters which results in decrease in the vision. So people take the help of the eye glasses to rectify their vision. But the fact is that while glasses and contacts may help one see more clearly right now, their eyes are constantly changing and they will never be able to find the perfect prescription to adjust for these changes.
It is now proved that your vision can be affected by many numbers of things -including the weather, your mood, your mental state, and anything else that can be distracting you. This means that your eyesight doesn’t just change from year to year, but from day to day as well. So it is always advisable to improve the vision naturally without glasses. But how to do it is a question asked frequently which is dealt with below:
1. Reduce the amount of stress in your life. Stress can be directly linked to the amount of strain you put on your whole body, and it definitely affects the eyes as well.
2. Do not keep staring at a thing for a long period of time. Relax your eyes frequently if you have long working hours demanding continuous staring (like working on a computer, long hours of studies etc)
3. Soak triphala in a small pot at night. Distil the water early in the morning and wash your eyes with it. This will improve your vision.
4. Sit before the rising sun when the red and orange rays of the sun directly fall on your eyes closed
5. Consumption of 250ml of carrot juice daily also helps in improving the vision
6. Sit before the rising sun. Close your eyes and allow the red and orange rays of the sun directly fall on your closed eyes.
Other than this you can practice some simple exercises daily which will help in keeping your eyes healthy. Some of them are:
1. Concentrating on an object -Hold a pen in your hand and concentrate on its tip for a couple of seconds. This will strengthen your eye muscles
2. Rolling your eyes- Roll your eyeball, five to seven times from extreme right, up, extreme left and down. Repeat it in the reverse direction for equal number of times.
3. Palming-Sit comfortably in front of a table, resting your elbows on a stack of cushions high enough to bring your palms easily to your eyes without stooping forward or looking up. Close your eyes and cover them with your cupped palms to exclude light, avoiding pressure on the sockets. Breathe slowly and evenly, relaxing and imagining deep blackness. Begin by doing this for 10 minutes, two or three times a day.
4. Color Day- Choose a color and look out for it throughout the day. When you see that color, be aware of the color and experience it. For example, if you see a red car, experience the shade of red, not the car.
5. See Clearly Method – Hold a small object in your hand at arm’s length and slowly move it towards your face till it touches your nose,, ensuring that your eye follows the object and retains focus upon it. Slowly move it to its original position. Repeat it 5 times.
How to keep nails shining and beautiful
Nails take lots of abuse and wear-and-tear from daily tasks. We use them to open, pry and scratch with out giving a second thought for it. We expose them to chemicals and detergents. So it’s no surprise when our polish chips, or worse, our nails become weak and damaged. We generally do not give enough time to our nails as we feel they don’t perform any useful work. But it is entirely wrong. It is the nails which protect our skin and help in the firm grip holding things. They also help the doctor to diagnose the disease properly. They also say a lot about your attention to personal grooming.
How quickly do the nails grow?
Generally, the nails grow “an eighth of an inch per month,” writes Michele Bender in Good Housekeeping. However, hormonal fluctuations, temperature or seasonal changes, diet, age and nail trauma or infection can influence this rate. It’s also found that different people’s nails grow at different rates,
Nails and Health:
Medical conditions can also affect nail health and appearance. Thin nails, ridges and changes in nail color shows the signs of iron deficiency. Heart conditions may result in reddish nails. Thyroid problems can cause nails to become dry and brittle. Lung, kidney, liver or other conditions can also lead to changes in nail color and texture,
However, not everyone with these health problems will develop nail symptoms, and usually other non-nail symptoms will show up first. On the other hand, having nail problems doesn’t necessarily mean that you have one of these diseases,
How to have strong& healthy nails?
- In order to protect the nails from dehydration you must moisturize them regularly. In fact, many nail problems — dullness, roughness, weakness, softness, splitting and peeling — result from dryness and dehydration. Moisturizing creams, oils or vitamin E capsules restore hydration, so nails become strong and healthy.
- Not only the nails you must take care to moisturize the cuticles too! Cuticles are the starting point from which new nails grow. “If the cuticle is supple, the new cells can push through more easily, so they arrive at the nail bed in the best of health. If the cuticles are dry, they may lead to tear, split and crack, leading to painful hangnails and infection
- Do not soak your hands in hot water for a long time. This will suck out natural moisture from your skin and nails
- Harsh cleaners and detergents may result in rough skin and weak nails. So wear gloves while cleaning or washing dishes. Also apply cream or lotion to the palms after completing the work. This will help in replacing the lost moisture.
How to care for nails naturally?
1. If you want your nails to grow fast, be sure that your diet is rich in Vitamins A, B-Complex, C,D, E, iron, calcium, sulfur and fatty acids.
2. Proteins also help to build up calcium in the nails. So at least have 8 ounces of protein in a day.
3. To strengthen fingernails silica containing herbs like horsetail, oat straw and nettle should be included in the diet
4. Biotin which is water-soluble Vitamin B and iron help in curing the brittle nails.
5. Inclusion of Zinc in the diet will remove the white spots from the nails.
