How to develop Self Esteem in your child?
It is the responsibility and duty of each and every parent to motivate their children internally, build the self esteem of the child and make them feel loved. If this is done they will not turn to gangs, drugs or sex to feel the power or belong.
Here I want to share with you the simple but effective keys which will help you as a parent to provide your children a sense of well-being and security.
Use Genuine Encounter Moments (GEMS)
Your Child’s self esteem is greatly influenced by the quality time you spend with him and not the amount of time you spend with him. Today with both the parents having their own career in front of them , very busy in their lives very often pretend to hear what the child is saying while actually think what next to do. This will reflect in the behavior of the child. If you don’t give your child GEMS throughout the day, he will often start to misbehave. Remember, negative attention in a child’s mind is better than being ignored. Equally important is to recognize the feeling of your child.
Use Action, Not Words:
Instead of shouting at your child for not doing something or requesting him to do some thing again and again, it is better to show them with action. For example if you want him to make up the bed in the morning, leave the bed un-maked for the day. Or, if you have nagged your child about unrolling his socks when he takes them off, then only wash socks that are unrolled.
Give Children Appropriate Ways to Feel Powerful
Each and every one wants to feel that he is important and powerful. If you give them means to show it they are comfortable. If you don’t they will feel neglected and unimportant. Some of the simple means to make them feel important are to ask their advice, give them choices, and let them help you balance your check book or help you shop.
Use Natural Consequences
Don’t interfere too much with the activities of your child. Let him face the consequences of his action and then learn by his mistakes. This will develop the self confidence in him. For example, if your child forgets to take his lunch to school don’t rush with it to the school after him. Let him manage a day with out his lunch box. Then he will know the value of remembering.
Use Logical Consequences
Some times the natural consequences are too far in future and it does not make sense for the child to wait till it happens. In that case try to use some logical consequence. For example, if your child has forgotten to return his video, instead of not allowing him to watch video for a week it is better that you return for him and deduct the amount (for late return) from his pocket money.
Withdraw from Conflict
Never conflict with your child. If at any point of time your child is being angry or speaking disrespectfully to you, it is best if you leave the room or tell the child you will be in the next room if he wants to “Try again.” Do not leave in anger or defeat.
Separate the Deed from the Doer
Never tell your child that he is bad! That tears at his self-esteem. Even if does some thing which you do not appreciate let him know that his action is bad but do not say he is bad. In order for a child to have healthy self-esteem, he must know that he is loved unconditionally no matter what he does. Do not motivate your child by withdrawing your love from him
Be Kind and Firm at the Same Time
Always be kind with your child. That does not mean that you always give in to your child’s tantrums or needs. Let your child know that you love him but at the same time put your foot down and be firm on issues you do not want him to act.
Be Consistent, Follow Through
Be firm and stay with what you have said before. Do not keep wavering with your talks and promises. For example you have agreed that your child will watch T. V. for 11/2 hours a day, keep the time fixed what ever the matter is. Do not give in to his demand of allowing him to watch more as his favorite match is on air or his favorite movie is on air. Do not give in to his tears, pleas, demands. Your child will learn to respect you more if you mean what you say.
Some changes in daily routine which will help your child to build his self esteem:
- Eating Right. Give your child a proper and balanced diet and at proper time. This will enable your child to stay healthy which is very necessary in building the self esteem.
- Avoid putting pressure on your child. Stress will poison his body and mind and making it that much more difficult to maintain a positive attitude. Train your child in relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation, which can help to ease stress and balance mind and body so that he feels more at peace and better able to handle whatever life throws at him.
- Give proper and full attention when ever you are conversing with him.
- Take his views and advice on some important decisions you are taking.
Improve Your Vision Naturally
Almost 90% of the world population is facing with vision problem. Today we find small children wearing eyeglasses as an aid to improve their vision. The most common reason behind this is the normal strain of daily life and the modern technologies that we stare at constantly-T.V., computers or mobile phones. All these stress our eyes beyond the normal para meters which results in decrease in the vision. So people take the help of the eye glasses to rectify their vision. But the fact is that while glasses and contacts may help one see more clearly right now, their eyes are constantly changing and they will never be able to find the perfect prescription to adjust for these changes.
It is now proved that your vision can be affected by many numbers of things -including the weather, your mood, your mental state, and anything else that can be distracting you. This means that your eyesight doesn’t just change from year to year, but from day to day as well. So it is always advisable to improve the vision naturally without glasses. But how to do it is a question asked frequently which is dealt with below:
1. Reduce the amount of stress in your life. Stress can be directly linked to the amount of strain you put on your whole body, and it definitely affects the eyes as well.
2. Do not keep staring at a thing for a long period of time. Relax your eyes frequently if you have long working hours demanding continuous staring (like working on a computer, long hours of studies etc)
3. Soak triphala in a small pot at night. Distil the water early in the morning and wash your eyes with it. This will improve your vision.
4. Sit before the rising sun when the red and orange rays of the sun directly fall on your eyes closed
5. Consumption of 250ml of carrot juice daily also helps in improving the vision
6. Sit before the rising sun. Close your eyes and allow the red and orange rays of the sun directly fall on your closed eyes.
Other than this you can practice some simple exercises daily which will help in keeping your eyes healthy. Some of them are:
1. Concentrating on an object -Hold a pen in your hand and concentrate on its tip for a couple of seconds. This will strengthen your eye muscles
2. Rolling your eyes- Roll your eyeball, five to seven times from extreme right, up, extreme left and down. Repeat it in the reverse direction for equal number of times.
3. Palming-Sit comfortably in front of a table, resting your elbows on a stack of cushions high enough to bring your palms easily to your eyes without stooping forward or looking up. Close your eyes and cover them with your cupped palms to exclude light, avoiding pressure on the sockets. Breathe slowly and evenly, relaxing and imagining deep blackness. Begin by doing this for 10 minutes, two or three times a day.
4. Color Day- Choose a color and look out for it throughout the day. When you see that color, be aware of the color and experience it. For example, if you see a red car, experience the shade of red, not the car.
5. See Clearly Method – Hold a small object in your hand at arm’s length and slowly move it towards your face till it touches your nose,, ensuring that your eye follows the object and retains focus upon it. Slowly move it to its original position. Repeat it 5 times.
How to keep nails shining and beautiful
Nails take lots of abuse and wear-and-tear from daily tasks. We use them to open, pry and scratch with out giving a second thought for it. We expose them to chemicals and detergents. So it’s no surprise when our polish chips, or worse, our nails become weak and damaged. We generally do not give enough time to our nails as we feel they don’t perform any useful work. But it is entirely wrong. It is the nails which protect our skin and help in the firm grip holding things. They also help the doctor to diagnose the disease properly. They also say a lot about your attention to personal grooming.
How quickly do the nails grow?
Generally, the nails grow “an eighth of an inch per month,” writes Michele Bender in Good Housekeeping. However, hormonal fluctuations, temperature or seasonal changes, diet, age and nail trauma or infection can influence this rate. It’s also found that different people’s nails grow at different rates,
Nails and Health:
Medical conditions can also affect nail health and appearance. Thin nails, ridges and changes in nail color shows the signs of iron deficiency. Heart conditions may result in reddish nails. Thyroid problems can cause nails to become dry and brittle. Lung, kidney, liver or other conditions can also lead to changes in nail color and texture,
However, not everyone with these health problems will develop nail symptoms, and usually other non-nail symptoms will show up first. On the other hand, having nail problems doesn’t necessarily mean that you have one of these diseases,
How to have strong& healthy nails?
- In order to protect the nails from dehydration you must moisturize them regularly. In fact, many nail problems — dullness, roughness, weakness, softness, splitting and peeling — result from dryness and dehydration. Moisturizing creams, oils or vitamin E capsules restore hydration, so nails become strong and healthy.
- Not only the nails you must take care to moisturize the cuticles too! Cuticles are the starting point from which new nails grow. “If the cuticle is supple, the new cells can push through more easily, so they arrive at the nail bed in the best of health. If the cuticles are dry, they may lead to tear, split and crack, leading to painful hangnails and infection
- Do not soak your hands in hot water for a long time. This will suck out natural moisture from your skin and nails
- Harsh cleaners and detergents may result in rough skin and weak nails. So wear gloves while cleaning or washing dishes. Also apply cream or lotion to the palms after completing the work. This will help in replacing the lost moisture.
How to care for nails naturally?
1. If you want your nails to grow fast, be sure that your diet is rich in Vitamins A, B-Complex, C,D, E, iron, calcium, sulfur and fatty acids.
2. Proteins also help to build up calcium in the nails. So at least have 8 ounces of protein in a day.
3. To strengthen fingernails silica containing herbs like horsetail, oat straw and nettle should be included in the diet
4. Biotin which is water-soluble Vitamin B and iron help in curing the brittle nails.
5. Inclusion of Zinc in the diet will remove the white spots from the nails.

HALITOSIS or BAD BREATH
Term halitosis is derived from Latin word “ halitus” which means “breath” and Greek suffix “osis” which means “ the condition”. In general, halitosis is the medical term for “ bad breath”.
Breath malodor should not be confused with the oral malodor that is caused after taking food items like onion or garlic or malodor that occurs in early morning hours on awakening. It goes by itself on maintaining oral hygiene. But if breath malodor persists , it reflects some pathology and doctor should be consulted.
Halitophobia or Pseudo halitosis is reffered as the condition when patient persistently complains of bad breath but it is not perceived by others. Such patients require proper counseling from psychiatrist.
Root cause for halitosis :- halitosis is mainly caused by anaerobic bacteria present in oral cavity. These bacteriae survive by taking food from oral cavity and excreting waste products. Their waste product mainly consists of volatile sulfide compounds (vsc) which is mainly hydrogen sulfide and smells like rotten eggs. Other compounds present in their waste product are:-
Cadaverine smells like corpses
Putrescine smells like decaying meat
Skatole smells like human fecal matter
Isovaleric acid smells like sweaty feet
These anaerobic bacteria mainly depend on protein diet like meat, eggs, fish, pulses, milk products etc. Whenever we take protein diet these bacteria also get their food and they breakdown the proteins present in food items with the help of enzymes, producing the waste products (mainly VSC). Thus causing bad breath. Even in the absence of protein diet these bacteria get the food from proteins present in saliva, remnant food debris, plaque, and dead cells present in oral cavity.
Volatile fatty acids such as valerate, butyrate etc also cause malodor. These molecules are released in blood in presence of any systemic disorder like hormonal problem, kidney disorder, or stomach disease, intestinal diseases, etc. Ultimately via blood these molecules reach lungs and are exhaled. Thus producing bad breath.
Halitosis is of two types :- Physiological and pathological halitosis.
Physiological halitosis is of short duration and mainly occurs due to certain food items ( like onion, garlic) or medicines which produces bad breath.
Now question arises how these foods cause bad breath??
It happens like this: When we eat these food items they get broken down into small molecules by our digestive system. These molecules have unpleasant odor which are released in blood. Via blood they reach our lungs and when we exhale, these molecules with offending smell are also released. Thus producing bad breath.
However, this type of halitosis resolves by itself on complete consumption of food item and once all the molecules are excreted. It can be avoided by avoiding intake of food item which cause bad breath.
Smoking……
Pathological halitosis occurs due to some pathology or disorder. It does not resolve until the pathology is corrected.
This includes…..
Local factors
a) Food impaction :- food gets accumulated in the deep carious tooth or the gap between two adjacent teeth. This accumulated debris serves as food for bacteria which act on it and produce foul smell leading to oral malodor.
b) Dental conditions :- certain dental pathologies like grossly carious tooth with severe infection or abcess can be the cause of oral malodor. Partially erupted wisdom tooth can also cause bad breath. As food gets accumulated around it and this area is very difficult to clean.
c) Unclean dentures :- regular denture wearers need to take care of their dentures. It should be properly cleaned with soap solution after meals and should be kept in water in night. If dentures are not properly handled food gets accumulated on it and these debris cause bad breath.
d) Xerostomia:- it’s a medical term for dry mouth.
Saliva is an excellent mouth rinse. It helps in cleaning debris and keeps the mouth wet. When salivary flow decreases mouth gets dry and cleansing action decreases which makes bacteria more active and thus producing bad breath. This is the why we feel bad odor when we wake up in morning or during fasting. As salivary flow decreases during sleep or starvation.
e) Periodontal or gum problems:- periodontal diseases mainly starts with plaque accumulation. As the plaque gets accumulated between the tooth and gums it leads to damage to bone surrounding that tooth. As a result gap is created between the tooth and the gums. This gap known as periodontal pocket is a perfect shelter for anaerobic bacteria which survive there and produce foul smell leading to bad breath.
f) Tongue coatings :- surface of tongue is very irregular. These innumerable depressions and elevations on tongue surface serve as ideal niche for bacteria to adhere and flourish. Remnant food debris also get accumulated in these irregularlities which is very difficult to clean. So these bacteria act on the food accumulated producing foul smell. That’s why it is advised to clean the tongue properly with a tongue scrapper daily.
Systemic factors
a) ENT problems like sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, etc. in all these conditions there is increased inhabitation of bacteria in oral cavity which leads to bad breath.
b) Pulmonary infections like T.B. , pneumonia, bronchitis are also associated with halitosis.
c) GIT diseases like regurgitations, gastric hernia etc.
d) Hormonal cause :- it is observed in most of the women that foul breath is felt in perimenstual period. Also a typical type of breath odor is experienced with increase in progesterone level.

Viral Infections: Many viruses like rotavirus (in children), Norwalk virus (adults and school going children), cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus, and viral hepatitis. Cause diarrhea. Generally diarrhea caused by viral infection lasts from 3 to 7 days.
Bacterial Infection: Diarrhea caused by bacterial infections is very severe and are accompanied with vomiting, fever, and severe abdominal cramps or abdominal pain. Bowel movements occur frequently and may be watery. They are mostly caused by intake of contaminated foods or drinks.
Parasites: The parasites infect the digestive system which may result in diarrhea. This is caused by the usage of contaminated drink.
Food Intolerance: Some people are unable to digest some food components like lactose. If they have those, it may lead to diarrhea.
Reaction to medicines: Reaction to a medicine may lead to diarrhea. Generally medicines like antibiotics, blood pressure medications, cancer drugs, and antacids may lead to diarrhea.
Symptoms of Diarrhea:
• Watery liquid stool- The stool passed out is liquid or semi solid. Sometimes it may be of red in color which indicates intestinal bleeding. If it is of thick, tarry black color it indicates bleeding in stomach or upper part of the intestine.

It is a condition when people cannot make connections between the verbal and written communications. People suffering from this disease very often find it difficult to distinguish the letter written. In short it is a learning disability found in 3% of the total school going children. But it is generally found that children suffering from dyslexia are gifted children and are intelligent; excel in other skills that do not include reading.
Causes for Dyslexia:
Though the exact causes for dyslexia are not known some of the common causes suggested by the doctors and dyslexia experts are
- under utilization of left brain as it is said that left part of the brain is programmed to do the things you need for reading and the right is not
- the absence of corpus callosum, a central bridge of tissue in the brain.
- a hereditary disease and is carried by genes.
- Early age hearing problem
Some even go on to say that it is caused by the combination of two or more of these causes.
Symptoms of Dyslexia:
